Open Letter to VANOC Media Relations and Press Operations from the Social Media - NOTE: Sent to VANOC {mediarelations@vancouver2010.com, pressoperations@vancouver2010.com} Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2008. Cross-posted at: raincitystudios.com, 2010.dailyvancouver.com, nowpublic.com, etc. Hello VANOC Media Relations and Press Operations, I am writing today on behalf of Raincity Studios, a Vancouver-based social media company who owns and publishes a suite of media properties. We had hoped to talk about social media (blogs, podcasts, twitter, wikis etc.) at the World Press Briefing this week, however we did not receive any response from the applications we submitted to the participate in the event. So, as per Mr. Furlong's suggestion at the Vancouver Board of trade meeting last week, we are liaising with VANOC. In brief, we'd like to have a conversation about how to allow fans and amateur media makers to document their Olympic experience while keeping out of the way of the IOC IP lawyers. As a company and as individuals, we've produced extensive,...

Insadong Korean Barbecue and Seafood Restaurant - On my recent visit to the neighboring city of Coquitlam when I dined at the satisfying Blue Sea, I spotted Insadong at the intersection of North Road and Lougheed Highway, as I was making the return drive home. If you?ve ever been to Coquitlam, perhaps you?ll feel as I did and think that a large part of this reported Korean population in the Vancouver CMA is all based here, given the prevalence of so many Korean businesses and signs in Hangul. Frankly, it could easily rival the likes of the Wilshire/Hancock Park neighborhoods of Los Angeles, and the Shin-Okubo area in Tokyo, for having a densely concentrated Korean community that manages to exist in its own little bubble all within another country?s society. A bit surprising, considering the small percentage of the population that are Korean. Continued w/pics http://foo...

Sunshine Restaurant - Vancouver, BC - Sunshine Restaurant was my opponent on this evening, innocently lulling me in with an Ali-like rope-a-dope as I drove by and spotted the brightly lit open sign still on. With easy parking access right in front, like a moth to a flame, I calmly walked in and easily got a free table. A few members of the staff were sitting at one as well, which probably should have been my cue to do a quick 180 - as you know things can be well when the workers are lounging about where customers normally should be. Seeing a large menu board that was filled with drink items such as fruit smoothies, other hot and cold beverages, and bubble tea plastered above the main counter, I wondered what limitations there would be with the food. Athene?s - Vancouver, BC - After initially having some difficulty finding Athene?s courtesy of my lackadaisical reliance on Google Maps, we found our way to the front entrance on a late weekday evening. Right away, the dimly lit interior and relaxed atmosphere made me feel as if we were being welcomed into the living room of a beloved heritage home. Inside, the place was already abuzz with a few full tables of diners as we were led to an empty table by the front window. Perhaps it was the absence of strong interior lighting and the fact that it was past 8pm already, but I did not get a sense of that tacky, white-everywhere-on-the-walls style of decor that seems to be the aesthetic of choice in too many North American Greek restaurants. House of Dosas - Vancouver, BC - The House of Dosas is located in an easily recognizable space, in a one-story building on the corner of Kingsway and Knight Street. With large inviting windows with minimal coverings, you can?t help but notice it when driving by, especially when stopped at the lights of that intersection. A friend of mine had mentioned that she had seen it and said we must make a visit one day, and as luck would have it, a group of us were up for an impromptu weekday dinner gathering. I was just hoping the dosas would be as great as the ones I had for my daily breakfast this past spring in Trivandrum, located on the southern tip of India. Hawker?s Delight - Vancouver, BC - With all the talk about doing what?s best for the people on ?Main Street? amid the financial meltdown and stump speeches in the American election, it stuck me that I rarely visit the road with the same name on Vancouver?s east side. Neither living nor working in that part of the city, nor having any friends with residences there that I would ever visit, Main Street really is an afterthought for me. However, I did know it is home to many off-the-beaten-track, hole-in-the-wall, beloved restaurants with the locals, and it deserved a thorough investigation. For this, I decided to walk up from the intersection at Broadway and Main, all the way up to 49th Avenue - and on both sides of the street Continued w/pics http://foodosophy.wordpress.com/2008/10/30/hawkers-delight-vancouver-bc/ ...

BCTF FSA Job Action - I am really worried about the job action the BCTF are pushing over the FSA. I have been told even the AGM delegates barely supported it (52-48). And these are the union activists. The majority of teachers I have talked to are opposed to it ("This is not a hill to die on"). So most teachers don't support it, but after the Executive World Tour goes around twisting arms and threatening what will happen without a 90% vote, it just might pass (the illusion of democracy, eh). Plus, when parents see this one they are going to be pretty ticked. Class size issues they get, working conditions and even salary they get, but going on strike because you don't like the once a year hour long test kids get in only grades 4 and 7? This one won't fly. The only ones that will win over this issue are the Liberals. In the last 4 years they've given teachers a 15% salary increase, and returned class size language into contracts. Now teachers will be making a political statement with t...

Sun Sui Wah Seafood Restaurant - Vancouver, BC - The original Sun Sui Wah on Main has an excellent reputation for Dim Sum, and with the positive reviews, rewards, and accolades, a fairly sterling reputation over all. ?Best of the City?, ?Best High End Chinese?, ?Best Seafood?. High praise in a dining city as diverse, filled with excellent quality choices, as Vancouver. All in all, Sun Sui Wah Seafood Restaurant was a reasonable, yet disappointing Dim Sum experience. There was nothing wrong with the food per se, but based on the recommendations, and the reviews, I was expecting a lot more. Sadly, all i got was another average Dim Sum experience. This leads me to question how often people really dine here - because while the quality of their reputation lives on, the food clearly fails to match. I wonder if in this case, the restaurant has lapsed into complacency - content to live on their reputation alone. That would be disappointing, because if they truly deserve the reputation they?ve carried for 20-some years, I would expe...

A Very Vancouver Christmas: Volume III Scheduled For Release On November 12th - A Very Vancouver Christmas, an album of original Christmas/Holiday music, in aid of the BC-SPCA, is slated for release on November 12th. All artists and services are donated, and all proceeds from sales will be donated to the aforementioned charity. The album features 13 original holiday songs by local rising stars, as well as some old favorites. The project is the creative brainchild of Vancouver Record Producer, Jenn Ashton of Rave On Studio, who wanted to find a way to showcase some of Vancouver's amazing new musical talent, while at the same time involve and give back to the community. She also wanted to pay tribute to non-traditional Christmas and holiday music and to the people who make it. In August 2006, ten of Vancouver?s most popular musicians and bands were invited to participate in this project for charity. They wrote and recorded their own original Christmas/Holiday music for the first volume in just a few short months, and the results were amazing! Due to the un...

Sweet Obsession - Vancouver, BC - Nestled in a quiet neighborhood along West 16th Avenue, Sweet Obsession has been in existence for well over a decade now and has a strong customer base that appreciates the delectable delights and creations of Pastry Chef Tracy Kadonoff. Associated with the next door Trafalgars Bistro (previously reviewed on Foodosophy), Sweet Obsession currently operates a sit down cafe as well as housing a retail counter for take-away orders. It is a popular destination for late night gatherings, and you will often find the tables inside (and in the summer on the sidewalk patio) all occupied even past 9pm. I?ve been there several times now over the past few years to eat-in as well as to take out, and most recently took friends there for their first experience after a group dinner.
